Kia ora,
This month’s Spokes’ informal meeting will be at [Updated] the Dunedin Social Club in the Octagon.
Lots of activities to talk about around the local elections, Albany street, and more. We’ll also be doing an overview of our website and app, with a tune up for all who attend.
Looking forward to catching up!
Looking forward to some good company, great beer, and even better discussion on Monday eve!
All @members are of course welcome, as is anyone who is on our site (or up for joining it).
Please RSVP on Devonia’s post above if you intend to come along.
Apologies team, I won’t be back in Dunedin until Labour Weekend. See you at the November meeting
Kia ora all, I hope you stayed warm this weekend. Here a reminder for our spokes informal meet up tomorrow night at the Swan on Bath Street. Please RSVP to our event, so we have an idea about numbers. See you there!
I’ll come and bore you all about how wonderful and SAFE it was to cycle in Japan…
This would be a good opportunity to launch (or at least discuss launching) Things to Fix.
The premise is that budgets are tight, but there is scope to fix small / cheap things which are likely to have a large impact on those cycling. The DCC doesn’t have a good way to identify these things.
As ‘eyes on the ground’, we are ideally placed to articulate what needs fixing, and which fixes are high value ‘wins’. These are great as wiki topics, that can be iteratively improved. Here is a good example:
These issues need to be raised to the CAN Infrastructure Team (currently not in existence but here’s hoping one can be formed!) so that we have good oversight of cycling infra across the motu.
Won’t be able to make it, but sounds like you will be having some good conversations.
Sorry would like to go, but a little poorly today
Sorry late notice. Can I still come?
Of course! See you in a bit
Hi all, for those coming, we’ll move to Dunedin Social Club. Looks like the Swan is closed from 3pm. See you all at Dunedin Social Club in the Octagon shortly
Was great to share a brew and a chat with you all! This is a brief overview of what we discussed:
Cities are very cycling friendly in Japan
@frstep outlined the realities of the streets of Japan. Basically, there are few cars, lots of bikes, and even more pedestrians. The city centres are super safe for those on bikes, and there is very little noise and pollution from vehicles.
This is all deeply cultural - there isn’t fancy infrastructure, but their cities are built in a way that encourages this way of life. Also, car ownership and usage is difficult and expensive.
Ōtepoti Pathways
There is a consultation on this next year. This is a long term (30 years!) plan, which we must ensure that we are a part of at every stage.
ViaStrada produced a lot of the material for the initial bits of this, but there isn’t a lot to find that is publicly available:
Bike Breakfast
Hurray! @heike will be leading this again next year. We plan to:
-
Have it in February at the Dunedin Train Station (regardless of weather)
-
Encourage sponsorship and participation from all the cycling related businesses in town, the ORC + DCC, cycling organisations, and other active transport interested groups
Things to Fix
As above, we need to articulate those things that are fixable around Ōteopti Dunedin in order to empower the DCC to fix them. Stay tuned!
Next Meeting
Will be early November.
