Spokes Dunedin Formal Committee Meeting - November 2025

Minutes for Spokes Dunedin Formal Meeting 13 November 2025

Attendees as above.

Previous minutes acknowledged and accepted:

Albany Street - reflections and next steps

General delight with the way the most recent Council decision went (narrowly in favour 8-7)
Note made of the reality of the politics involved, and the inherent challenges that we must meet in order to be effective.

One key observation is that ideally we need to be at the table for future council meetings where public statements are invited.

@robyn made the point that it would be extremely helpful to clearly articulate our values and have some tactical approaches ready to roll at short notice for future projects.

Meeting each of the councillors would be highly valuable.

Action Points

  • Devonia will put a call out for someone to co-ordinate our attendance at Council (and DCC Committee) meetings.

  • Aim to meet each and every of the councillors in person over the next few months, shared among the committee and/or interested members

Bike Breakfast

Due to Heike no longer being available to lead the organisation of the Bike Breakfast, we need someone else to take lead responsibility for organising it.
@heike and @devoniakruimer are jointly organising the Bike Breakfast.

This is now locked in for 2026-02-10T11:00:00Z 2026-02-17T11:00:00Z(agreed with DCC). We won’t change the date if there is inclement weather.

Ōtepoti Pathways

The draft has been presented to Devonia and Fraser by the DCC.

In brief, it is a 30-year plan to connect up all the Dunedin active transport infrastructure. Of concern, the amount budgeted for this is tiny compared with road maintenance.

Next meeting with the council staff is hopefully next week (TBC)

Things to Fix

This is definitely still a priority. The council has re-iterated to us that they would find it very helpful to have low cost / high impact suggestions well articulated.

Action Points

  • @NathanK will promote this to our members actively (now that Albany St has settled down somewhat)

  • All Committee members to please post a new Wiki article about a low cost fix to the cycling landscape in Dunedin

CAN membership

CAN and Spokes Dunedin are no longer financially tied (this is true for all regional cycle advocacy groups now), due to a restructure forced by the new incorporated societies framework.

Currently, we encourage all Spokes members to also join CAN, as they are complementary (and synergistic. Of note:

  1. Spokes Dunedin’s focus is on Dunedin cycling advocacy
  2. CAN’s focus is on national cycling advocacy

Spokes Dunedin Constitution

This needs to be lodged with the Companies Office before 2026-04-04T11:00:00Z

To do this, we need to ratify our draft constitution at our next AGM (which will be in March 2026).

Please take a look at it and give any feedback (or make necessary edits).

Next Meeting

2025-12-14T11:00:00Z, informal, at Inch Bar.
