Was great to share a brew and a chat with you all! This is a brief overview of what we discussed:
Cities are very cycling friendly in Japan
@frstep outlined the realities of the streets of Japan. Basically, there are few cars, lots of bikes, and even more pedestrians. The city centres are super safe for those on bikes, and there is very little noise and pollution from vehicles.
This is all deeply cultural - there isn’t fancy infrastructure, but their cities are built in a way that encourages this way of life. Also, car ownership and usage is difficult and expensive.
Ōtepoti Pathways
There is a consultation on this next year. This is a long term (30 years!) plan, which we must ensure that we are a part of at every stage.
ViaStrada produced a lot of the material for the initial bits of this, but there isn’t a lot to find that is publicly available:
Bike Breakfast
Hurray! @heike will be leading this again next year. We plan to:
-
Have it in February at the Dunedin Train Station (regardless of weather)
-
Encourage sponsorship and participation from all the cycling related businesses in town, the ORC + DCC, cycling organisations, and other active transport interested groups
Things to Fix
As above, we need to articulate those things that are fixable around Ōteopti Dunedin in order to empower the DCC to fix them. Stay tuned!
Next Meeting
Will be early November.
