Minutes for SPOKES Dunedin Formal Meeting 8 Sept 2025

Attendees as above

Councillor Candidate Questions

Public for the last week
In the ODT today!
Voting starts tomorrow.

Plan from here:

  • Devonia to post about hit in spokes.nz as SPOKES FB account & Instagram
  • Replies to this by committee members will be very helpful
  • Fraser to rerun the AI Matrix for this, and get it up on the site
  • Ongoing publicising of this will be very valuable

Small Improvements Project

We plan to focus on this next, after the local govt election busyness settles.

  • There is significant scope for the DCC to do small / low cost jobs which materially improve the cycling experience around the city
  • The SPOKES Wiki would be ideal for this, requiring a re-launch and some focus / support
  • The aim would be to articulate and rank suggestions from across the city, with the perspectives of those who actually use (or would use) those routes
  • This would allow the DCC to pick and choose from a well curated selection

New Constitution

We have a new Draft Constitution (members only).
Please all @members review this and comment on it.
Aim to vote to accept this and implant it by the AGM

Bike Breakfast 2026

The Bike Breakfast is an excellent way to physically meet cyclists from across the city, the DCC, the media, and relevant interested organisations. It is very high priority.

We aim to stick to the same formula, i.e.

  1. February, after O-week. At the Train Station. Rain, hail, or shine.
  2. Good promotion, including chalking, posters, media, website, and socials. @jessica’s help and advice will be invaluable
  3. A long breakfast, over several hours.
  4. Food supported by local organisations and volunteers
  5. A brief address by the Chair, someone from the DCC, and maybe a guest
  6. Membership drive / recruitment as part of the package

If Heike is available, she can repeat her fine work of the last few years.

  • it would be very helpful to have another one or two committee members deeply involved to help with continuity into the future

Other Business

@NathanK co-opted to CAN Board.

We’d like him to bring these up with CAN:

  • Regional cycleway connections which cross regional boundaries
  • Facilitate our learning from and collaboration with other regional cycling advocacy groups (such as Spokes Canterbury)
  • Advocate for national cycling issues (e.g. speeds on city streets, safe passing, helmets, etc)
  • Visiting speakers and online events / webinars

Coffee with Bikes

@Robyn encouraged to run more of these, which are very popular.

Regular meetings with the DCC staff

  • Ensure 2 Spokes members attend DCC meetings on an ongoing basis
  • Bring up cycling uphill on pavements, and other small improvements
  • We’ll report back to all @members after each one

Next meeting

Informal meeting on 2025-10-05T11:00:00Z
Aim for this to be the Swan.

Apologies team, I am overseas until Labour weekend, so won’t be able to make this.

Anyone missing a Lenovo pencil? One has “appeared” in our house and I can’t think of any meeting in our house that might have had people bringing devices.

I thought it must be mine (have a couple), but seem to have them all accounted for.
