Winter night light ride

Join us in embracing the darkening skies and winter season with a mid-winter evening lights bike ride, followed by the warmth of a drink at a friendly pub

We’ll meet at the Botanical gardens main gate with our lit-up bikes, and we’ll also have a few magical led light systems to lend for your bike if you’d like to really shine! From here, we’ll casually wind our way through the city streets in all our lit-up glory, before ending up at the Steamer Basin pub for a sociable drink. Open to all ages and abilities, it’s not a race, it’s a celebration of the winter season!

What: A casual evening bike ride through the city, with a bike light show as well. A happy way to highlight, celebrate and promote cycling in Dunedin.

Where: Meeting at the Botanical Gardens main gate (5.30pm), finishing at the Steamer Basin for a drink (estimated 6.30pm?)

When: Wednesday 1st July 5.30pm (alternative rain date Wed 8th July)

Why: An enjoyable casual ride with friendly people, promoting cycling as a wonderful mode of transport. Plus, a free first drink! (capped at xx people).

For an example of some of the lighting on offer, see related thread here:

If you’d like to attach one of our light systems to your bike (we’ll have approx 8 available), they can be attached via zip-ties and will just require providing a normal portable battery pack.

As preparation for this ride, we’ll be having a quick workshop this weekend so people can deck out their own bike in LED lights  . Gerard will bring the light kits (11x bullet pixel LEDs with controller), all people will need to bring is their bikes and a power pack and cable (USB-C end).

I thought 11am this Saturday 27th in the Botanical Gardens, on the lawn in front of the band stage (so we can use the stage if weather isn’t good). Let me know if this time doesn’t suit though and we can try Sunday or an alternative time!

Hope to see people there

Salut John,

sorry, please remind me when the night ride is - and I cannot come this Saturday.

Sunday morning would be better for me - but only if that works for the majority.

Salut Heike, the lights ride is next Wednesday 1st July, 5,30pm, meeting at the Botanical Gardens main gate. Very happy to change the prep to Sunday, unless others can’t make that. 10.30am Sunday ok?

I can’t make any times this weekend, sorry! (But I do have a battery pack to power lights!)

Oui,

for me that is perfect!

But totally ok if it does not work for others!

All good Fraser - there’ll be time before the ride on Wednesday to hook yourself up, we just thought it would be good to get some set-up beforehand to make it a bit easier :slightly_smiling_face:

When we say a battery pack, do we mean a power bank?

Yes battery pack/power bank/phone charger pack: needs a 5V power supply and cable with a USB-C end to run the controller & LED string. They’re set for a max of 1000mA draw so even a single 18650 battery pack should run them for an hour or two.

Looking forward to this! Going to try and resuscitate Pacman from 4 years ago. Will also pass word on to the wider Pedals team.

Following on from the weekend workshop, these are some of the route ideas discussed for the Wednesday ride (some alternatives in different colours). Any alternative ideas welcome!

How are we going with advertising this event, or at least encouraging people we know to come along? It would be great if it’s more than just the Spokes committee (no offence team!)

I agree - it’d be great if everyone could pass this on to all their networks! Outside Spokes it’s mainly been word-of-mouth encouragement and Steamer Basin social media thus far. I think Gerard has advertised on the Biking in Dunedin site too

Happy to put it on the Spokes FB Page if this hasn’t happened yet

That’s probably a great idea, Devonia. Our lack of a social media person is showing!

That would be amazing Devonia, thank you!

Just a reminder that anyone wanting to borrow a LED light set on the day that you’ll just need to provide a power bank and cable (USB-C end). Thanks!
