Really unfortunate incident - but the design of the bike parking at Bunnings and Mitre 10 does predispose to this happening. I have been trapped in by car parking before because the cars were touching my back wheel when in the bike rack and people have nearly hit me when I’m reversing my bike out of the rack (often fully loaded with DIY stuff so not always able to squeeze through a tight gap)
Can we provide a response to the big box stores highlighting this issue?

The trailer drop off here would make it easy to be pinned against wall or gas cage by someone reversing and overshooting.
Hi Ben, would love to see some action from the big box stores. Maybe the council can help here aswell making sure that access to the stores will be safe for all customers. Not just the people arriving by car.
Also, something else; I’m the organiser of Urbanerds. We do sessions every two months or so talking about how we can build better cities and also how we make it safer for all transport users. Next session is tomorrow night. Would be great to see you there!
But yeah, do agree. Would be great to see the spokes team talking to management of these stores.
FYI here is an image of a local hardware store of my hometown in the Netherlands. Sectioned off for bike parking and people walking and divided by bollards, so you don’t have to cross with car traffic.
