Prioritises safe, connected infrastructure—modelled on successful local shared paths—to ensure walking and cycling remain practical transport options. Advocates for better mapping of green spaces and integrating “people spaces” near bus stops and cycleways within new developments. Focuses on seamless connectivity to foster a more accessible, active Dunedin.
Good morning, thank you for the opportunity to make comment. I have answered under each question below:
I think it is important to give people a variety of options on how they travel depending on their individual circumstances, with the issues at the moment with the fuel crisis it makes people more aware, which is a good thing, about active travel, I see bike sales are up, and also public transport use, Hopefully that will continue when the situation eases and the city provides accessible options for people to use, I think public transport is an important issue about how people move around the city.
I’m in favour of having good options for everyone to take part in walking and cycling, I am fortunate to live in the area of the shared path, which as a community board we worked hard to get the final section completed, which is proving to be a hugely popular option for people, especially when the weather is good. More safe options like this through the city is important and needs to be part of the plans council makes around ‘transport’.
Advocate for public spaces, Dunedin is lucky that it has a lot of green space, but we need to be actively promoting these locations so people know and can enjoy and use them. Woodhaugh Gardens are an example of a fabulous space but not well known well to a lot of people. The town belt is a gift left to the city historically and needs to be better known and the parks and spaces across it. I would make sure when developments are proposed that there is a suitable ‘people’ space included for active enjoyment and active travel opportunities, close to bus stops, close to cycleways. Its important to continue to actively promote the public spaces we have, I guess I’ve been around long enough to know the city well and previous promotion of our public spaces but everything is so focused on having it on a website, surely a brochure with maps can be produced to encourage people to make active choices and use out public spaces more. I guess it can be downloaded and printed but not everyone has access to these facilities although our libraries are excellent at making this available to the public to use and print information.
