Love to Ride - our chosen way to map cycling and incidents in Dunedin

Love to Ride is a free worldwide (but NZ-based) platform that supports cycling through incentivised challenges, automated trip logging, and community engagement, serving as a key tool for Spokes Dunedin to promote active transport. The service enables local advocacy by generating “Rate My Routes” and incident data for infrastructure lobbying, alongside hosting the annual Aotearoa Bike Challenge.

The Map

The Love to Ride heat map is a visual, color-coded guide of bicycle traffic in Dunedin from anonymised GPS data from user-logged rides. This data empowers Spokes Dunedin to move beyond anecdotes, using empiric evidence to identify heavily used routes, dangerous pinch points, and critical gaps in the city’s cycling infrastructure for targeted advocacy with our local council.

People cycling can contribute data to the our heat map through automated app tracking via the Love to Ride app or linked third-party apps like Strava, Garmin, and MapMyRide. Additionally, users can log trips manually and provide qualitative route evaluations through the Rate My Routes feature.

The App

The Love to Ride mobile app acts as the primary tool for automated, background GPS tracking of cyclist behavior, while also serving as an integration hub for third-party platforms like Strava and Garmin. It facilitates engagement through behavioral nudges and captures immediate user feedback on route safety and comfort.

We encourage all cyclists in Dunedin to download and use the app on their device.
