Feedback on the Logan Park Management Plan is now open. Cycling barely gets mentioned: “Assess the main vehicle entrance on Union Street East with consideration to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity with Forsyth Barr Stadium and the West Harbour cycleway.” That’s about it.
Here’s my responses in case anyone finds them helpful:
I strongly support improving pedestrian and cycle access and linking to the West Harbour cycle way, with safe crossing points on Anzac Avenue.
I support reduced parking on Logan Park Drive to improve this as a cycle and pedestrian route.
I support improving pedestrian paths and improving links between Logan Park and other destinations. There also need to be cycle route links with the City and cycle routes. These safe active travel links must include Logan Park High School.
There is currently no safe cycle route from the City to Logan Park - angled parks are dangerous for cyclists, Dundas Street is particularly hazardous. Pedestrian access would be improved by wider pavements along Dundas Street and Butts Road - these could also be shared pedestrian cycle paths.
There needs to be better management of traffic on Butts Road. It is currently dangerous to cyclists with cars overtaking past parked cars even with a 30kmh speed limit, this is also a risk to pedestrians and the pavement is too narrow for the volume of school children using it. Safe cycle routes are needed linking to the West Harbour Cycle Way, towards the Octagon and to the North. This could be achieved by better cycling access along Logan Park Drive continuing to Logan Park School, together with traffic calming and removing parking on the section of Butts Road between LPHS and Dundas Street. Alternatively a shared pedestrian and cycle path along the whole length of Butts Road with a safe crossing at Anzac Avenue. Speed limit on Butts Road should be 30kmh but this alone is not enough - needs speed bumps and narrow sections to prevent speeding and overtaking.
