Emergency location indicators installed along the Te Ara Moana

This sounds like a very good thing to have:

I do wonder if they could have been a little more subtle. For instance, a simple (and reasonably discreet) km marker would do that job as well as give people other useful info while cycling or running.

If it’s a subtle km marker that you can’t see from where you are you need to leave the site if the incident and run (or drag yourself?) to the nearest (or worst case not the nearest because you guessed wrong) to check the details. I can cope with the visual pollution so that doesn’t have to happen.
Whilst modern technology and searchable address databases are really good, there are cases where they are not helpful. And this trail is used by people who are unlikely to have an inreach or PLB

Yes, agreed km markers would have been way more useful, but like everything about port to port cycleway, this has been overengineered to the nth degree. Since 2017, 85% of 111 calls result in an absolute position, why is a “zone” sign neccesary? How about using that $10,000 to remove the numerous hazards on the pathway to prevent accidents. I took 4 older canadian visitors on the Te Ara Moana in January, and my 66 year old friend smoked herself on one of the many unnessessary bollards and ripped up her clothing on the chainlink fence. And she’s a champion triathlete and still got injured. Just make the cyclway safer so people don’t get injured. And what about every other cycleway in NZ, when are they gonna get “Zone” numbers??
