📨 Emails flying about - how many is too many?

Up until now, everyone who has joined Better Streets has received emails for each post. While this was fine for ages, the increase in traffic recently means that we are probably best to dial it down a bit.

I’ve turned that off now, and switched on daily activity summaries for everyone. This means that you will get one email every 24 hours since you last visited the site (or from when the site last emailed you). If you visit daily, you will never get one. You will only get one if there is new content.

@frstep has asked to receive emails for everything - so I have turned on mailing list mode for him. If you would like the same, you can turn it on here: /my/preferences/emails

Discourse will automatically email you for anything in a topic that is clearly of interest to you (replies to you, topics you’ve engaged deeply in, mentions of you, etc).

If you’d like to be notified of anything specific (such as a category, tag, or a topic), you can Watch it (look for the image).

Let me know if you have any thoughts about how we could or should do this better, or if you have any issues taming the beast.

After that brief flurry, Better Streets has gone pretty quiet. COVID in our house has scuppered most of my efforts and I suspect that I’m not the only one!

For the moment, I’ve increased the notification rate of the forum so that every post gives one. Will turn it down when the need arises (whinge to me if it is a problem!!)

Yup, covid and holiday. Will try and kick spokes forward but the first couple of weeks of t2 are looking busy already.

In view of an increase in email traffic over the past month, I’ve just toned down the default notifications for Better Streets.

Now you should only get an email / notification if you are Watching the specific Topic, Category, or Tag. Otherwise, you will only get a daily summary on the days when you aren’t emailed and haven’t visited the site.
