Email glitches from and to SPOKES

Ah, teething problems!

@frstep has just uncovered that spokes.nz hasn’t been receiving any emails. This was due to a configuration hangover from the merger with betterstreets.nz, and is now sorted (whew). So you can reply via email to posts and messages and it should all be sweet.

Also, I’ve been importing some of the old content from the old https://spokesdunedin.wordpress.com/ site. This inadvertently sent out email notifications - I think I’ve worked out how to stop that happening now.

Lastly, at the moment the site is notifying heavily (every post), but this will be stepped down shortly to only new topics. You can override the defaults for any category with the little image buttons or via the link at the bottom of emails.

Thanks for the update. Interesting to read about efforts to address broken glass on the roads, bit bemused by the historic nature

Vaguely related- armoured tyre inserts or goo?
Extremely low maintenance is more important than weight (e-bike). Expense a moderate factor.

Whilst I hate the glass, and can’t understand how the university put up with it, I find that with the right tyres it is a non-issue. On our cargo bikes we run Schwalbe tyres with their very good SmartGuard puncture protection and in 5 years of riding around Dunedin the only 2 punctures I’ve had were unrelated to glass.

As a student I once tried armoured tyre inserts and it was like riding in treacle. Goo might work - not tried it.

I bike along Leith St through the Uni usually 3 times a week and notice the periodic rise & fall of levels (& types) of glass. I’m running normal inner tubes and find the best protection is a decent tread on the outer tire. Knobbies have a bit more resistance for a plain commute but are a godsend to avoid flats. Having said that, if it’s brown glass, a flat is inevitable.
