Cycle commuting on the rise in Christchurch - Spinoff article

Why are rates of people choosing to cycle to work on the increase in Christchurch - this article in the Spinoff takes a look.

And of course people round here will say “Ah, but Dunedin is not like ChCh”.

(It certainly does not have 14,000 people regularly cycling to work!)

Quote from bobthecoder - March 2025 Spokes Cofffee Outside meetup: "With Ebikes Hills Disappear- Dunedin has become Christchurch! " Sure we don’t have the weather, population or sunshine of CHCH but geography doesn’t need to limit Dunedin cyclists. With Ebikes there is no reason why dunedin shouldn’t “charge ahead” and create a much more extensive and coordinated bicycle network throughout the city. Perhaps we just need a major earthquake to shake things up and get some better cycling infrastructure in place. But right now Dunedin is a hot mess for cyclists compared to many other NZ cities.
