Thanks so much for the questions. Answers below
My vision is to have the urban cycleways linked, the hotpots like the crossing point on Portsmouth Drive addressed, to be able to safely commute by bike into the central city from outlying suburbs - South Dunedin, Mosgiel, North Coast etc.
I have supported cycleway initiatives throughout my nine years in Council and recently during the 9 year plan to ensure that in the absence of the Waka Kotahi subsidy, Council is ready with all the plans detailed ready to go when the funding returns. It’s especially heartening to see school children, through safety measures such as speed limit reductions and bike skills courses, feeling more confident to walk, cycle and scooter to school.
I have championed the funding of the final sections of Te Awa Ōtākou and look forward to it being completed by year 4 in the 9 year plan.
I continue, via submissions to ORC, to lobby for improvements to our public transport system and to support all the initiatives for active transport in DCC’s Zero Carbon Plan.
The links to urban cycleways, the Tunnels trail and the other routes to outlying areas as above.
George St is completed, Bath St is almost there, then it will be the turn of Princes St and the Octagon to turn them into more people friendly spaces. Now those who opposed George St revamp have realised the sky has not fallen in, one would hope any urban planning initiatives to make the spaces more people friendly would not be met with such vitriol next time!
