Thoughts?
I think that we should probably be putting our energy behind the new app by lovetoride.net - this has an excellent map for indicating the nice and not-so-nice bits of where we ride every day:
It also has the ability to record incidents. I’m not sure about near-misses though.
It could do with some more polish (I’m not sure the best way to offer feedback), but certainly is pretty good right now.
As a bonus, it can automatically record your rides for the Aotearoa Bike Challenge:
I’ve just popped back into Love to Ride - it is really good!! It utilises OpenStreetMap (which is great), and has already got a lot of rider data. It has a local Dunedin page, as well as being worldwide, which is awesome. Lastly, it also gives the opportunity to report incidents.
Out of the box, it provides a ‘comfort’ map of the places people ride in Dunedin. And it it pretty spot on. Here is an example of the north end of Dunedin City:
I think that we should embrace this as our ‘source of truth’ for cycling in Dunedin, as we’ve struggled to do anything better locally. And it would be great if we all actively contributed to it.
It works by installing an app on your device with location permissions. This then tracks your rides in the background without you needing to do anything. Occasionally it will gently pester you to rate some of your rides. You ‘paint’ your comfort level on the map of your ride with a finger; this is pretty easy to do.
Has anyone else used this?
I haven’t used this, but it sounds like a good idea. I agree that it’s probably better to use something universal like this, rather than trying to cobble something together locally. I just hope they don’t sell our location data to weapons firms like Pokemon Go (not trying to suggest any particular committee meeting has blood on their hands, of course!)
