Rail over pass C channel

Kiaora, As discussed at Urbanerds Sept 2025 shifting of the C channel maybe 100mm or so would help cyclists cross the pedestrian over bridge. Please add you thoughts on actions we can do to get this achieved below.

Just to share, my submission description to the DCC FIX IT page. Let’s hope that garners some action from the DCC. My Reference number for this submission was 1259500.

Also the Urbanerd template is here.

The C channel which allows bikes to be pushed up and down the steps at the railway station is a great thing and worthy of celebrating. There is a problem though. It’s location is slightly incorrect which has a big effect on bikers ability to use it. Regarding the actual problem, because the channel is too close to the chain link fence, it forces bikers to lean there bike over at an angle to avoid the pedals or the handle bars getting tangled in the chain link fence. The solution here is to shift the channel over perhaps 100 mm or so (please check actual distance needed), to make it alot easier to use as it allows the bike to be pushed upright rather than sideways. The stairway is plenty wide enough to allow for this and still have safe pedestrian edge. Technically this is easy to do, once the C channel is removed it can be refitted with counter sink screws and a drill driver. As mentioned before the knock on effect of not fixing this is it forces bikers to use other ways to get across the rail corridor. If a biker was trying to get to the Edgar Centre then the main way to cross the rail corridor is from the prince’s st side car over bridge. This is quite dangerous for bikers due to the lack of safe places to bike and cross traffic while on the bridge.
