# 📨 Control your Emails

## Overview

Several people have told me that they struggle to control the number of emails that they receive. This is a vital part of how people interact with the site, and people vary in what they would prefer. There are 3 basic alternatives:

1. [Personal things only (the default) 📨](https://spokes.nz/t/control-your-emails/373#personal-things-only-the-default-incoming_envelope-3)

2. [The Bare Minimum 🕶](https://spokes.nz/t/control-your-emails/373#the-bare-minimum-dark_sunglasses-4)

3. [Mailing List Mode 📨 📨 📨 📨](https://spokes.nz/t/control-your-emails/373#incoming_envelope-incoming_envelope-mailing-list-mode-email-me-everything-incoming_envelope-incoming_envelope-5)

You control these via [your email settings](https://spokes.nz/my/preferences/emails).

## Specific control: 🔔 Watching and 🔕 Muting

You can tweak very precisely what you get notified about (and thus emailed if this is still enabled). Just look for the little bell (like this ![image](https://spokes.nz/uploads/default/original/1X/892922cc62c27be0dc6378e436bf0048bc741da2.png)) - these are on every Topic, Tag, and Category. Click it and you get something like this:

## Personal Things Only (the Default) 📨

We have settled on the default of only sending emails for

- personal messages
- when something is specifically directed at you
- an Activity Summary

## The Bare Minimum 🕶

If you primarily use the app / website, emails can become annoying fast. Fortunately, they are easy to turn off via [your email settings](https://spokes.nz/my/preferences/emails).

Also, you can do this via the link at the bottom of every single email from [spokes.nz](http://spokes.nz):

## 📨 📨 Mailing List Mode: Email everything! 📨 📨

If you love your Inbox, then this is for you. You’ll get lots of emails; you can deal with these as you wish. You can still visit the site and interact there directly, of course.

> ⚠ We don’t generally recommend this as you are more likely to miss the more important and relevant content. These will tend to be drowned out in the subsequent email snowstorm 🌨.

You enable this via the bottom option of [your email settings](https://spokes.nz/my/preferences/emails) (don’t forget to hit `Save Changes`):

Thanks for this very useful guide, Nathan.

Despite this, I’m having problems with my email notifications, ie: I’m not getting any notifications of new posts (or anything else).

I enabled mailing list mode a few days ago but can see there are new posts here I haven’t received email about. Is there anything else I can do?

Ah yes - get me to fix the technical problem stopping the site from sending emails!!

You should get a tonne of them flooding through now sorry.
